Gum Treatment
Why does gum disease matter?
Gum disease (periodontitis) progresses silently and is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults. In the early stages, the only sign is bleeding; if left untreated, the bone supporting the teeth breaks down and the teeth begin to loosen.
Symptoms
- Gums that bleed when brushing or on their own
- Bad breath, red and swollen gums
- Gum recession, teeth that look longer or feel loose
Treatment options
- Scaling and polishing: Treatment of early-stage inflammation
- Root planing (deep cleaning): Removal of deep deposits in the gum pockets
- Gum contouring and grafting: Esthetic correction of receded or excessively visible gums
Prevention
Brushing twice a day, using floss or interdental brushes and having a checkup every 6 months go a long way toward preventing gum disease.
