Scaling and Polishing

What is tartar?

Bacterial plaque that builds up on the teeth hardens over time with minerals in saliva and turns into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed with a toothbrush and causes gum inflammation, bleeding and bad breath.

How is the cleaning done?

Tartar is gently removed from the tooth surfaces and along the gum line with ultrasonic instruments, and the teeth are then polished smooth. The procedure usually takes 30–45 minutes and is painless.

How often should it be done?

For most people, a checkup every 6 months with cleaning as needed is sufficient. More frequent visits may be recommended for those who build up tartar quickly or have a history of gum disease.

Does it damage the teeth?

No. Scaling does not damage the enamel; on the contrary, it protects gum health. Brief sensitivity may occur after the cleaning and goes away on its own.
