When Should Your Child's First Dental Visit Be?

Many parents bring their child to the dentist for the first time only when they have a toothache. Yet making the first visit a simple get-to-know-you appointment, before any problem appears, helps the child build a positive relationship with the dentist.

When?

A first checkup is recommended when the first baby tooth comes in, or by age 1 at the latest. After that, regular checkups every 6 months are sufficient.

How to prepare for the first visit

  • Avoid describing the dentist as a scary figure; use positive language instead of words like "needle" or "it won't hurt."
  • Schedule the appointment for a time when your child is well rested and has eaten.
  • At home, play a little "dentist game" by counting the teeth of a doll.

What happens during the checkup?

The teeth and gums are examined and the risk of cavities is assessed; fluoride is applied if needed. Parents receive guidance on brushing, bottle feeding and eating habits.

Remember: Even though baby teeth are temporary, they are very important for the health of permanent teeth. Regular checkups started early help your child grow up with a healthy smile.
