What to Know After Implant Treatment
When properly planned and well cared for, dental implants can function without problems for many years. We have put together the key points to keep in mind during the healing process.
The first 24 hours
- Bite on the gauze for 30–45 minutes.
- Do not rinse your mouth or spit.
- Apply a cold compress to your face at intervals.
- Avoid hot drinks and foods.
The first week
Eat soft, lukewarm foods and avoid chewing on the implant side. Use the mouthwash your dentist recommends and brush your other teeth as usual. Mild swelling and bruising are normal and subside within 3–5 days.
Avoid smoking
Smoking reduces blood circulation and hinders the fusion of the implant with the bone. Quitting smoking during the healing period, and ideally afterward, significantly improves the chances of success.
In the long term
Implants cannot get cavities, but the gums around them can become inflamed. Daily brushing, using an interdental brush or water flosser and a checkup every 6 months will extend the life of your implant.
