How to Brush Your Teeth Properly

Brushing our teeth is something we all do every day; however, brushing with the wrong technique does not remove plaque and can even damage the gums. Here are the basic steps for proper brushing.

1. Choose the right toothbrush

A soft or medium-bristled brush with a small head is ideal for most people. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when the bristles start to fray.

2. Brush at a 45-degree angle

Place the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and brush with small circular motions without pressing hard. Hard, horizontal scrubbing can cause gum recession.

3. Pay attention to timing

Brush for at least 2 minutes each time, and don't forget the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of your teeth. Gently brushing your tongue also helps reduce bad breath.

4. Don't neglect between your teeth

A toothbrush cannot reach between the teeth. Using dental floss or an interdental brush once a day protects the areas where cavities and gum disease most often begin.

5. Use fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel. After brushing, simply spit out the excess toothpaste instead of rinsing your mouth with lots of water.

Along with regular care, a dental checkup every 6 months helps you catch problems while they are still small.
